Kazakhstan made the paper today!

Imagine my suprise while on my lunch break at Steinmart, munching on my Oatmeal Squares cereal and reading the paper, when low and behold..I see Kazakhstan mentioned-the home of our future family member or members! Mentioned in the same article as the store I'm dying to see, that I've never even seen in real life cuz we don't have one yet! It's so crazy!!

I will retype the article, just for you!

Ikea refining it's Russian accents

Borat Sagdiyev, the fictional Kazakh TV journalist who redefined political incorrectness, must be chuckling. Long -suffering Tampa Bay Ikea groupies will finally get their first Tampa store in 2009. But they should be aware Ikea's fastest-growing market is Russia and it's adjacent breakway republics. In fact, the swedish furniture giant plans to increase its 10 stores there to 25 within five years, reports the Moscow Times. Ikdea will open it's first megatore outpost in Siberia in November and may pour $500 -million into it's first two stores in oil rich Kazahstan!!

How funny! When I was at the Hyatt towards the end of our journey, I met the man in charge of opening the Ikea in Astana! He was from CT too, thus we bonded. :)

Ikea is a awesome, especially the market section of the store. We take it for granted that there is one 15 minutes away from us. The coolest thing is that there are always so many different languages being spoken by the shoppers when we go there. It draws an international crowd.

Wow thats crazy. I wanted to get furniture from IKEA for Eyeballs room but coultnd cause the nearest one is hours away (Miami or Atlanta), and yet, I could have gone to Kaz and adopted a baby and shopped at IKEA?

Incredible! They are really booming. First comes Ikea, then comes Starbucks. Hopefully Wal-Mart will never rear its head over there.

It's now amazing how Kaz jumps out at us in the news and in articles. When before it might not have been of much interest.

How cool that IKEA is spreading out like that! I do feel rather lucky that I have one that is a 15 minute drive to me. I suppose when we leave VA someday....it'll be weird to possibly not have one so close!

You know you've made it when you get an Ikea. It is quite an experience! I especially like the Swedish food part.

Wow, Susan, do you mean that little 'ol Cincinnati is a step ahead of Tampa in the Ikea department?! :-) The Ikea just north of Cincinnati opened two weeks ago. People camped out overnight to be first inside -- kid you not. (I think they might have been giving away some prizes, but camping out?!) The media ran traffic warnings for a week in advance, warning all of those except Ikea shoppers to avoid the area for the first few days. So funny. We stil haven't made the trek, but now that I'm reading these comments, I feel it is something we better do soon to see what I am missing! At some point I suppose I better set up a nursery! LOL.

Gee Susan, ANOTHER reason to come visit me. :-) We can wander the maze all day long right across from the Mega Mall (aka Mall of America).

That would be super cool if Kaz had a couple Ikea's. It wouldn't surprise me. Kaz, like most of Europe, is totally into that kind of look and style.

I love Ikea and I love Kaz! What a perfect match! :-)

Happy Friday!!

Ikea? I guess I don't know what I'm missing.

Wow - that is super interesting. We have an IKEA in Bloomington (by Minneapolis) right next to the Mall of America and it is GREAT! I love that darn place, but you learn not to visit on the weekends as it is ridiculously crazy busy. :)

Borat is hilarious. Seriously, if you haven't seen it, you should. I told you about it a while ago. I suggest having a few beers before you watch it, and to not let Sean watch it with you. There's a naked fight scene between 2 hairy guys, frickin' hilarious!

Love 'n miss,
GiGi

I saw an IKEA in Ust but it wasn't anything like the IKEAs here. It was on the top floor of a three story mall (their version of a mall not like the Wests version of a mall) and it was maybe 3000 square feet maximum....but still you could tell the furniture was def IKEA.

I recently heard that Colgate opened a plant in Kaz recently. It is the place to be!
